The Global Dimension in the new Danish Climate Act
In addition to domestic climate targets and a new institutional framework, the new Danish Climate Act will include separate commitments to the international dimension of Danish climate policy. The agreement reached includes the following elements:
- The government is obliged annually to present a global strategy for how the government's foreign, development and trade policies contribute to ensuring that Denmark plays a role as a leader in international climate policy.
- The Climate Act commits the government to presenting a separate global report on the international impacts of Danish climate action, including the effects of Danish import and consumption.
- Reporting will also cover international impacts of domestic efforts, including emission reductions from shipping, aviation and export of renewable power.
- Cooperation on climate with major emitters and developing countries will be strengthened.
As an input to the negotiations of the Climate Act, CONCITO presented a memo on eight areas where Denmark can influence global climate efforts:
- Ambitious climate diplomacy: Coalition building beyond governments
- Enabling actors to address consumption-based emissions
- Companies must take responsibility internationally
- Money must drive the green transition
- Technology development
- Global knowledge sharing and “Clean Energy Transition Deals”
- Climate finance
- The European dimension.
